Dear Dr. Lutcavage,
On the morning of Friday, 9/12 I was woken by the phone at about 6:00 AM by a friend that lives between 31st and 32nd streets, 2 blocks off the seawall, saying the tide and waves were already breaking on top of Seawall Blvd. Myself being a little further east on the Isle, put on coffee and took my first cup up to see for myself. After seeing some pretty large waves crash against the wall and the tide over the rock jetties, you could barely make or see where they were between waves crests and troughs, as with any coastline the waves were washing up all manner of trash, junk, and cast off from boats to beach goers and tourists. As you know, Seawall Blvd. is 5 lanes and 2 shoulders wide, the driftwood and junk was already 2/3 of the way across in most places.
I returned home for another cup of coffee and my camera and headed back up there to take a short walk and a few photos. Having to be careful where I walked, I did a lot of looking down at the refuse, driftwood, fishing bobbers, cans, bottles, etc. I noticed the tip of what I thought was a marker lite from a life jacket which turend out to be your tag. I took it home and washed some of the dirt off, that's when I saw the letters and called the phone number (I don't own a computer and the rest of history, as you know).
About 3 PM my neighbor across the street and I got on the road and off the Isle. She and her daughter went to her parents' in Denton, I ended up near Waco in a little motel about 200 miles inland according to my mileage, and began watching the news!
I headed back Sunday to a buddy's house in Santa Fe on the mainland and stayed there 'til the lites were back on at my place and the authorities let some of us back on the island, only people living behind the seawall could stay.
I must admit that my neighbor and I didn't get much damage to our own homes, no water inside. A few missing shingles off my roof, some more refuse was washed up in my yard, even through my fence. My shade tree was dowm amd dead, as most of my outside plants. While changing my water filter, I found the water line beneath my house was about 4 inches below my floor beams. The friend that woke me that morning didn't get any water damage, but the roof of the motel on the wall came off and left a nice dent in the side of his house and part of his wood fence is gone. I've been home a week now and I'm still cleaning up outside, but there were lots of peope who weren't so lucky. The whole island is a mess! The mail started again on Wednesday, 10/1, so you can send mail at my home address.
When I get some prints made I'll send them to you, may take a few days, though.
Thanks,
Kelly
