September 20, 2009- Nova Scotia harpooner Edmund Atkinson recaught a bluefin tuna that had been X-tagged nearly one year earlier. PTT ID #83004 was tagged on August 8, 2008, while tagging off of southwest Nova Scotia with the F/V Fin Seeker. At the time, the fish was an estimated 500 lbs!
In September of 2009, the tagged fish was recaptured by Eddie. Only the "spaghetti tag" remained on the fish, the only identifier of association with the Large Pelagics Research Lab. The X-tag had detached from the tether, and failed to report, so this recapture provided valuable information about the condition of the fish one year after release, and some insight into the X-tag when it fails to report.
