September, 2007- Scott Erickson recovered PSAT #7380 at a beach in Matagorda, TX. This particular tag was deployed from the F/V Fin Seeker on October 6, 2006 on a 600 lb bluefin tuna off of Nova Scotia. It began reporting to the Argos satellite system in the Gulf of Mexico on April 16, 2007.
So, in just over six months, this fish had traveled at least the entire eastern seaboard and into the Gulf of Mexico!Through the Argos satellite system we were able to see where the tag had "popped off" of the fish, as it is programmed to do, but by the time it reached shore, it was no longer transmitting. It was lucky for us that Scott was so observant at the beach that day! To the right is a picture of Scott just before sending the tag back to us for further analysis.
