April 15, 2008- Marianne Odendahl, a self-described free spirit living on the island of Santa Maria in the Azores, discovered PTT ID #3815 near the lighthouse in Maia while walking her dog during her lunchbreak. This particular tag was deployed on the F/V Fin Seeker on October 18, 2005 off the coast of Nova Scotia. The bluefin tuna was an estimated 425 pounds at the time of tagging.
PTT ID #3815 began reporting to the Argos satellite system (indicating it had "popped off" the fish) on November 21, 2005 south of Harker's Island, North Carolina. This fish had swam from Nova Scotia to North Carolina is just over a month! That's nearly 1000 miles! It had been missing for over two and a half years before Marianne found it.
Marianne writes: I am a beachcomber by passion and have a huge collection of various driftseeds and the occasional message in the bottle. But finding the tag made me really excited and I would like to know more about the results of the data collected.
In a surprise package containing the tag, which arrived at the University of New Hampshire in April, Marianne wrote a simple message, hoping this would help us with our research. Returned tags are incredibly valuable to us, as we are able to download all of the data recorded by the tag since the tagging date. We offer rewards for all returned tags, so please keep your eyes peeled!
