September 14, 2007- Tag number AZ01430 was caught East of Chatham, Massachusetts by experienced tuna fisherman George Morris and Chet Grocki aboard Sanford Hochman's boat on the F/V Casey. Sanford said via email "We were excited not only because we caught the bluefin tuna, but the fact that it was tagged!" Amazingly, this fish spent 775 days at liberty, first tagged July 31, 2005 by our juvenile bluefin tuna conventional tagging collaborators at AZTI Tecnalia in Basque Country and recaught 3,330 miles across the Atlantic. The fish had grown over 48 inches since its first capture. Many thanks to Sanford for calling in the tag and we hope to get many more in the future!
